WEIRD SUN
Rifts done right
The twenty-first century didn't look so bad on its face.
Sure, the world economy had a few hiccups, hunger and poverty were ever present, and global warming was a bit of a rising concern. But world war was a distant prospect, life in the First World had never been better, and accelerating technological advance held the promise of universal prosperity. As the decades piled up, it soon became clear that all the technology in the universe couldn't save the Earth. The oceans surged and shifted, drowning millions and depriving millions more. Democracy folded under the onslaught of the 2030s Depression, giving way to theocracy and dictatorship made ever more monstrous by advanced technology. When the bombs finally fell in 2138, crushing Earth civilization and wiping out half the Solar System's population in a few hours, many, especially in the space colonies, considered it only the finale of a long and horrible tragedy.
In fact, it was just the beginning.
After the final missile exchange, for three days a deathly silence reigned upon the Earth, broken only by the wails of the dying and suffering. Then reality's walls caved in. Suddenly, the entire Solar System was terrorized by beings from other Suns, from myth, from fantasy, from our own imaginations, brought in by terrific weirdstorms that slashed open the skin of the universe. Humanity's home became a reality well, a junkyard and asylum of the multiverse. Weirdness, magic, returned to Sola. The Sun itself became its source. The Ontoclysm, as the first days came to be known, forever changed the face of solaroid civilization. From the chaos emerged a shaky new order, new rules, new systems of society never before imagined. Now, the fight is fierce among the survivors. Now, the question burns: who shall be the master of this shattered reality?
Now, under the Weird Sun, the new Great Powers scramble for the spoils.
Verdant Venus with its Brilliant witch-lords, commanders of world-rending magic in the name of the Pyramid and the God of Gods. Selene, pluralist haven of commercial and personal liberty, where beings from every conceivable reality contract as privateers and tomb raiders for the divinely ascended Brands. The Martian Republic, last refuge of reason in a universe gone mad, its defenders the Marines in shining powered armor sworn to drive back the demons with railgun slugs and thermonuclear fire. The glorious Jovian Empire, guarded by the noble Robotto Samurai, their husks given life by the Emperor's light and their swords as red as the Rising Sun. The Cybernetic Communion of Saturn, heralding harmony in the Universal Singularity but reviled as a technomagical tyranny of the machines. And quietly watching from the edge of darkness, the starkly scientific Kuiperian Confederation, preparing for the era to come of marvellous technotopia in the soothing shadow of the Black Sun.
The Powers fight to rule the devastated Earth, taking on a bewildering variety of beings in the haunted and demon-infested ruins as they carve up the ravaged land into imperial holdings and spheres of influence. They fight for control of the solar memespace, their hostile ideologies clashing for mindshare. And they seek out new stars and new worlds beyond the Astral Plane, new opportunities for treasure and adventure. This schizophrenic universe asks constantly of its hapless inhabitants: Who are you? Where do you come from? Whose side are you on? What do you want? The answers are as many as the stars. Under the Weird Sun, the possibilities are limitless.
